History of the Profession.

Back in 1970, the Government of Malta issued a call for application for a trainee Dental Hygienist with the eventual scope of sending this candidate to read for a Diploma in Dental Hygiene at the Royal Dental Hospital, London UK. In 1976 and after some initial training in Malta the candidate was sponsored to attend for training in the UK. On her arrival back in 1977, she set up a 3 year course leading to a Diploma in Dental Hygiene Therapy. The first candidates started the course in 1979 and nowadays the course is run by the University of Malta as a 3 year BSc (Hons) degree programme.
